For those of you who don’t know, Vince Lombardi was a NFL coach. In my opinion he spoke some of the most inspirational words I have ever heard.
Below are some of my favorite quotes from Vince.
When you’re reading the quotes you’re probably going to feel motivated, the key is to take advantage of this. Don’t just read. Make sure you apply what the quote is stressing and most importantly take action.
1. I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – victorious.
When you were reading this quote you probably formed an image in your mind of what it looks like to be fully exhausted and stretched out on the floor filled with pride after you have achieved whatever it is you wanted to achieve. Well the next thing you need to do is treat each day as if it’s championship day. Each and everyday you should strive to go all out for your dreams to the point where when you end the day you are filled with EXTREME exhaustion. If you’re not tired when darkness falls, you didn’t go hard enough. Give it everything you have. Treat each day as if today is the day you are chosen to prove that you have what it takes to make your dreams a reality.
2. Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.
A lot of people fall into this trap. They believe that if they simply work hard they will become successful. After all one of the most common success tip a successful person shares is you have to work hard. This is true, however working smart is just as important if not more important. You have to make sure that you’re working hard on the right things. Work hard on things that will get you closer to your dreams. Work hard on things that truly matter. Don’t just go in circles.
3. Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Either you possess the winners mentality or the losers. Winning is a habit. That is the most important thing from the quote above. It’s your job to make it a habit. The only way you go about making something a habit is by repetition so keep at it. Keep winning. You were born to grind and destined to shine.
By making winning a habit you’ll become accustomed to it that it’ll be hard NOT TO win. Trust me.
4. Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.
A lot of people say that you shouldn’t strive to be perfect…usually these people are the unsuccessful.
If you examine the successful you will realize that a large percentage of them are perfectionist. By abiding by this they achieve greatness.
Take the late Steve Jobs for example. This man embodied the definition of a perfectionist. He made sure that every thing associated with Apple was as perfect as possible. Heck he even made sure the design work on the inside of the iPhone’s was top notch. That’s right, THE INSIDE. No one ever looks at the inside, but that doesn’t matter because this same perfectionist mentality is what led Apple to the top of the world.
What this means is that you need to stop giving half assed efforts. Stop doing a mediocre job. Be the best at it. Every little detail counts. Don’t slack off towards the end like many do.
5. The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.
As long as you chase your dreams with persistence, work hard, dedicate yourself, and give it everything you have, you will be just fine in life and you’ll sleep easy at night.
6. Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.
As you can see the formation of habits was a big thing for Vince. He always stated that you need to form habits such as the habit of winning, however at the same time you need to avoid certain habits such as the habit to quit. Quitting becomes a habit very easily.
Never quit at something that you want. When you quit you will form a habit. This isn’t just true for professional matters, but personal matters as well. If you quit in personal matters this habit will begin to form and it will poke its ugly head into your professional matters as well. So refuse to quit.
7. The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.
Do you want to have a great life? Do you want to have a memorable life? Do you want to leave a legacy?
Yes, you say?
Well the way to make this happen is by being excellent. So with that stated, BE EXCELLENT. Make a pledge right this second that you’re going to be excellent from this day on. Everything that your name is associated with is going to EMBODY the definition of excellence.
