Before I begin with this fascinating article I would just like to state that this is the very first article to ever be posted on this new website. Damn, history has been made….haha.
Now we return to your scheduled article.
In today’s world with the population reaching an all time high it is inevitable that people are striving for success to some degree. Everyone has a different definition of success installed in their mind. Ask a mail carrier his/her definition of success and ask a professional NBA player and you are bound to get two very different answers.
The fact remains that success is not defined externally; instead your own definition of success is made up after years of life experience and probably has a lot to do with the wiring you received as a child. By wiring, I am referring to the way your mind was shaped as you grew into an adolescent. This involves all your values, beliefs, goals, and aspirations.
I think we can all agree that success is defined differently by every human being on this planet, some view success in financial terms and others view success as happiness. Regardless of your definition of success, one thing remains the same which connects all these definitions of success and pools them together.
That being, why do over 90% of the people that make up the world’s population never attain the success that they aspire to hit. Could it be their psychology, or is it something more common? Although, your psychology plays a huge role in determining your success, in this article I am going to focus on something else. Something that can be transformed with a little bit of will power.
90% Of People Fail Because They Fail To Take Action
Bam, there you have it. The above statement pools all the failures together and groups them together. Not to be rude or anything, but you are simply failing to take action if you are unsuccessful, today. Now you may argue that all you do is take action. You’ve done this and you’ve done that, however the results that you expect are just not coming your way.
Well, if you’re familiar with the personal development sector then you have probably heard the following quote “insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.” Maybe that is your problem. In order to fix this, you need to focus on WORKING SMARTER.
If you’re taking action, that’s fantastic, but make sure it’s the right type of action. For instance, say you run your own business and everyday you go out and complete a third of your to do list. That’s great. However, getting things done and getting the right things done are not the same thing.
Look at what you have completed over the last couple of days and consider how big of an effect that has had on your business. Chances are it was something minor; instead the tasks that yield the most will power and result in the greatest effect on your business are probably left untouched.
These tasks, probably involve marketing your product, finding new prospects etc. Let’s get real, probably everybody despises doing these activities just like you, however the successful put their nose to the grindstone and get it done. NO MATTER WHAT. No excuses and no dancing around the tasks that need to be accomplished, they simply get it done. That is the reason why people in today’s world are simply not successful.
How To Become The 10% That Succeed In Life
Well it doesn’t take a genius to state the following.
If you want to succeed in life, simply do the things that you hate to do that have the greatest effect on your work. I find it funny how the things that we need to get done are the things that we hate to do. On the other hand, the things that possess no real value are the tasks that we love to accomplish. Maybe it’s due to the fact of the different degrees of difficulty. Hence, you are bound to succeed if you can condition your mind to focus on the “difficult” tasks that require your attention.
How To Get Yourself To Do Those Terrifying Difficult Tasks
During my childhood, I remember a vivid moment during one of my pops lecture sprees. He was going on and on about getting things done and I honestly couldn’t care less. I was young and dumb so to speak and just wanted to get back to playing my Playstation; however he refused to let me go until I had learned the lesson that he was trying to install in me.
He tried and tried, but to no prevail. I simply made it look like I was absorbing the information; however in all actuality my mind was elsewhere (I was probably thinking about girls’ haha). Anyways, I had failed to learn the lesson my dad wanted me so desperately to learn. At that age, I mean come on all I care about is getting my kill streak up in Call of Duty not some boring ass lecture that seems to be all theory based. Therefore, I let the information go into one ear and flow out the other.
However, the next day I remember I stumbled upon an article in a magazine that was lying around titled “How To Get Things Done!” I chose to pick it up and began reading since I had nothing better to do. I don’t remember what magazine it was from, but surprisingly enough that article taught me how to get things done.
The article captured my attention and installed in me the ability to focus on the right things as it stated the following words that remain with me to this day:
“When in doubt, choose the harder task or what you don’t want to do- that’s usually exactly what you should do. Take the path of MOST resistance. Avoid the past with the least resistance. If you follow this advice, soon enough the path of most resistance with become the easier path and the path with the least resistance will become the harder path.”
I bet my father probably stated the above in his own way, however I wasn’t having it. There’s just something about not taking advice from your parents haha.
APPLY THAT ABOVE PRINCIPLE TO EVERYTHING. From something simple like writing an article, to something more detrimental like choosing what college you want to go to.
Below is a list of some of the most common low and high resistance things that we are all faced with:
– Doing something out of anger
– Submitting to peer pressure
– Going along with gossip
– Starting your new health diet “tomorrow”
– Submitting to your child’s crying demands
– Going to the gym when you don’t feel like it
– Feeling the fear and doing it anyway
– Ordering something healthy like a salad when you want pizza
– Standing up to your boss and letting him/her know how you feel
– Contacting that scary new prospect (Everyone hates cold calling huh?)
Damn, this has been a long first post and although I was reluctant to start this post it actually followed suit to the principle I just shared. It started off tough (most resistance), however as the words began to flow and my thoughts began to mature it soon became easy and believe it or not writing this was pretty fun
I end this long post (if you made it this far and haven’t stopped reading, I applaud your effort my friend ) with a quote from Yaro Starak
“Taking action when you don’t feel like it is hard. Finding a way to transform the task from something you hate to something you enjoy because it helps you experience a result you want, is the trick. You need to restructure your conditioned response to the task, to anchor it to a desirable emotion that helps motivate you to get it done.”
