Before I lose control of myself and end up with a 1000+ word article I just wanted to say my RSS feed is officially working, woohoo. Feel free to subscribe.
Now, it’s time to become legendary. Viewer Discretion is advised… Ha! Just kidding I just always wanted to say that.
Anyways, all joking aside…let’s begin.
This article is going to explore the idea of becoming legendary. What I mean by ‘legendary’ is basically leaving a dent on the universe that can never be erased, regardless of how much time has passed. An example of a legendary figure is Steve Jobs. Boy did he leave a mark on the world. So when I refer to the word ‘legendary’. I’m referring to people who have left their mark on the world and who will continue to live on in the hearts of millions well after their last breath.
Before we begin talking about how you can become a legend, we need to see what makes up a legendary figure.
What Makes A Legendary Figure?
You may be thinking, it’s their talent. Damn, bastards are more talented than me. That’s the reason why they go out and change the world while I’m sitting here watching the latest episode of Law and Order. Well, talent may not have as much to do with it as you may think. Talent is important, don’t get me wrong and it is a driving force behind these people becoming remarkable, however it only plays a small role in the overall picture.
Alright, so if talent isn’t the main component behind the likes of Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Lebron James, Wayne Gretzky then what the hell is it? Well allow me to tell you what I think it is…
These exceptional people did not settle for an average lifestyle, instead they DREAMED BIG.
BOOM! From an early age, they strove out to become the best they could be. They weren’t going to stop at nothing short of greatness. It was either the top or nothing. Mike Tyson said it best as he stated in an interview
“I’m a dreamer. I have to dream and reach for the stars; and if I miss a star then I grab a handful of clouds.”
Their aspirations didn’t consist of landing a dream job as a supervisor at McDonalds (I know, I’m exaggerating), but these people dreamed big and I mean BIG.
What Stops The Average Person From Becoming Legendary?
Well it’s quite simple really, the average person doesn’t have an enormous amount of self belief. They simply don’t believe in themselves and they think they don’t have what it takes to become GREAT. As a result, with this mindset they aim very low and they have low standards. These are the people that chase money instead of greatness. They don’t dream big. They get sucked up by the daily grind life throws their way and they think they can’t change it. Instead of striving to become an individual who leaves a mark on the world, they just become an individual who just lives and dies doing ‘average’ work.
Another key distinction between average people and legendary people is average people settle. They might strive to become great, however once they reach some form of success they settle. They think they have made it, they stop climbing. They celebrate their success for too long and never really move on. Let me give you this analogy, a legendary figure continues to climb each stair regardless of the success he/she encounters along the way, they simply embrace their success and continue. The average person on the other hand, experiences some level of success and stays put on that stair forever. They don’t move up or down. They simply stay put. The key therefore is to continue moving up the stair case.
Erick Thomas had a great quote about this as he stated:
“Never settle for yesterdays success, it has an expiration date.”
And lastly, they are simply not willing to do the work it takes to become great. Greatness is earned, just like success. If you want millions of people to mourn your loss when you’re gone you have to do some remarkable work my friend. The average person just isn’t willing to do this. Instead of putting their mind to something productive that has potential to blow up, they focus their willpower on video games or watching movies. It’s the choices they make that simply translate into them being ‘average’ individuals.
How You Can Become Legendary
Alright, I’m going to ask you a question now. You may or may not have heard this one before. But please do answer it, it will equip you with the ability to become legendary and it will join together all the points I have talked about above.
Before I ask the question, some things need to be stated. When you’re answering the question you need to DREAM BIG. I’m talking BIG as in people will look at you like you’re crazy and you deserve to be put in a mental hospital when you tell them what you want to do. You need to come up with an answer that people will laugh at, an answer that people will reply to by saying ” Are you kidding? YOU’RE going to do that? Forget it.” Are you ready? Well here is the question….
What would you do if you knew you could not fail (If success was 100% guaranteed)?
Remember, Dream BIG now. This is what your legacy is going to be based on. When you have come up with your answer you have reached the first step in thinking like a legendary figure. The ability to dream big. Congratulations.
I ask myself this question everyday in the morning and whatever answer I come up with I set out and go do it. Not only does this build your legacy, but your life becomes much more enjoyable.
What’s The Next Step?
Well, now that you have come up with some BIG DREAM. You have to execute. Now this is the point where I may lose a few of you. That’s fine, not everybody is cut out to become great (don’t worry, there’s no shame). Heck if it was easy, everybody would have books written about them. However, now I’m speaking to the few crazy individuals who are setting out to accomplish this. I’m talking to YOU. Yes YOU! The next step now my friend is to get this done, no matter what. This is your end result. Figure out where you are today and what needs to be done along the way in order to get to where you want to go. Eat, sleep, and breathe whatever your answer was. I know I seem like I’m CRAZY in the head right now and the answer you have picked is so FAR FETCHED. But trust me; devote your heart and soul to this dream. Just begin itching, crawling, walking, running, sprinting towards this dream and before long you will have become one of those individuals people look up to and say “dammit, if only I was as talented as her/him.”
